Flower Season on the West Coast of South Africa occurs during August and September each year.
Sometimes, like 2026, the flowers further north started flowing in July already! That's nature and we cannot control the weather.

There are numerous Hiking Trails available during August and September. The Steenbok One Day Trail has a distance of 13.9km and will take approx. 5 hours, excluding breaks. The Postberg Two Day Hiking Trail has an overnight stop at Plankiesbaai. You will cover 15.5 km (6 hrs) on Day 1 and 11.8km (3.5hrs) on Day 2 Small groups of 12 people.
Tsaarsbank has loads of picnic and braai spots - you will need to get there early during the busy times
Kraalbaai is a beautiful spot - perfect for picnics, swimming (in summer!) and just enjoying the beautiful Langebaan lagoon. The Langebaan Lagoon was designated as a wetland in 1988 according to the Ramsar Convention criteria.
Bird watchers are well catered for with a number of bird hides in the park. Species include Curlew Sandpipers, one of the abundant migratory species identified by their downward curving bill. Sanderlings, Lesser Flamingos, Great White Pelican and more.
NB: Viewings do depend n the seasons, especially with the migratory birds who frequent the Langebaan Lagoon and the Berg River Estuary.
The Red Knots are amazing birds. They can journey up to 15,000 km per year

This allows them to almost double their body weight to sustain their first massive, non-stop flight of 7,000 to 8,000 kilometers up to West Africa (usually stopping in Mauritania or Guinea-Bissau)"
"While up to 10,000 to 12,500 red knots migrated to South Africa and Namibia during the 1970s and 1980s, their local numbers have dropped sharply since the 1990s. Today, only a tiny fraction of the population makes it all the way down to the tip of South Africa, with the vast majority choosing to end their southward migration further north in West Africa"

During the Flower Season queues at the gates can be up to an hour long so do get there early.
Tourists from all over the world visit Postberg during the Flower Season - it is very special.

The Seeberg Viewpoint offers another stunning area of flowers plus a trail of 4.6 ending at the gate. Wandering amongst the flowers (look down for the tiny species)

Animals can also be seen in the Reserve but often they are miles away! Zebra, Eland, Gemsbok, Ostrich, Red Hartebeest, Steenbok and Bontebok. As the area is so huge, they truly are free to roam undisturbed. So it is a privilege if one spots any animal or reptile. Do watch out for the tortoises - these are often seen crossing the road at a leisurely pace. Maybe stop, put on your hazards until the torty has safely crossed the road!
